Genista aetnensis

Genista aetnensis is a deciduous large shrub or small tree that bears willowy green stems with thinly distributed small leaves. The lack of leaves means that the arching stems do most of the photosynthesis. The picture above shows one of the small trees that can be found at Beth Chatto's Gardens.

Bright yellow flowers appear from July to August. These fragrant and pea-shaped flowers completely cover the tree giving a block of colour to the garden while creating a great backdrop for other plants. This effect can be seen as the yellow stamens of the Achillea millefolium 'Lansdorferglut' are highlighted.

It is ideal for a Mediterranean garden due to its drought resistance, full hardness and requiring little maintenance. Pruning must be done lightly as new growth will not rejuvenate from old wood. Also keep in mind that removed material can be treated as semi-ripe cuttings to produce new plants.
