Verbascum nigrum is a semi-evergreen biennial with hairy leaves and spear’s of yellow flowers containing pink haired stamens. Flowering from early summer to early autumn, these flowers are a great pollen and nectar source for various invertebrates, such as Bombus spp. 🐝 Once the flowers pass over the stems provide hibernation sites for invertebrates such as Coccinella spp. 🐞The Seeds are also eaten by birds such as goldfinches.
It's a great all around plant being hardy, wildlife friendly and providing both height and colour to the garden. Ideal for a wildlife garden, unfortunately, along with Verbascum thapsus they are prone to the Mullein moth caterpillars: Shargacucullia verbasci.
