Camassia leichtlinii
This Camassia leichtlinii is from the Keukenhof gardens. Part of the Asparagaceae family, this bulbous perennial stands out from the crowd with its tall racemes of purple star-like flowers. I personally love the contrast of the elongated yellow anthers extending the perianth; almost encasing the purple petals. Flowering late spring to early summer this plant provides both elegance and structure.
Grow in moist but well drained yet fertile soil. For longer lasting flowers plant in a sheltered semi-shaded area. Once faded cut back the flower spike for a more formal look, or leave it to dry out then remove the die back. When winter arrives the plant will be dormant, this is the time to remove offsets to re-plant or discard. However, these plants prefer not to be disturbed once established.
