Iris pseudacorus

This is Iris pseudacorus a monocotyledonous plant, taken by myself.

Iris pseudacorus is from the Iridaceae family, it is a herbaceous perennial with bright yellow flowers that consists of 3 erect petals and 3 arching sepals. Sometimes there are brown veins on the sepals and the plants can reach 1.5m in height.

It can be an invasive plant if the correct requirements are met. Underground rhizomes are the main reason for the rapid reproduction, however, seeds are fertile and do best when exposed to smoke or processed via scarification. Also, the temperature must be over 15 degrees celsius for germination to occur.

(Scarification is where the seed coat is damaged either mechanically or with hot water to allow moisture to enter and hydrate the enzymes and stored food.)

Parts of this plant are poisonous if eaten and handling the plant may cause irritation and/or an allergic reaction. This plant is used in sewage treatment and it is known to remove metals from wastewater.
