Geranium pratense

This is a Geranium pratense, from the Geraniaceae family.

This plant grows in big clumps reaching over half a metre in height and spread. It is a perennial plant with hairy stems that bare an umbel of white, blue or in this case violet flowers usually in pairs, each flower having unnotched 5 petals and 5 small hairy sepals. Each flower consists of 5 fused carpels that form the pistil (female reproductive organ) and around 10 stamens (male reproductive organs).

These flowers appear in early to mid summer and if the flowers are cut back they can flower a second time in September.

The bees 🐝 love these flowers and so do humans as these flowers have multiple medical properties and can be used to relieve certain conditions such as cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery, nosebleeds, ulcers, haemorrhoids and to staunch bleeding wounds.

Please do not eat plants without consulting a doctor.
