Crocosmia 'Lucifer'
This is Crocosmia 'Lucifer', taken by myself.
Crocosmia 'Lucifer' is from the Iridaceae family. It is a deciduous perennial with arching sprays* of red funnel-shaped flowers that are held up by all stems reaching 1.2 metres in height which are surrounded by erect sharp narrow leaves. This makes this plant ideal for the back of boarders as the tall flower will be seen over the smaller forward plants.
Crocosmia flowers can also be yellow or orange like the 'Canary bird' or the 'Jackanapes' species. It makes a perfect flash of colour in any garden over the summer months of August to September. This plant also grows from underground clump forming corm* colonies which can be divided in the spring and re-planted elsewhere in the garden.
*A corm is a rounded underground storage organ, much like a bulb.
*Spray is a single stem that bears buds/flowers.
